Care Hub

Your kokedama is a living thing. It doesn't need much β€” but it does need attention.
This guide covers everything you need to keep it green and thriving.

Read slowly. Observe your plant. It tells you more than you'd expect.

πŸ’§ Watering β€” the essentials

A kokedama is not watered like a potted plant.
The correct method is submersion.

How to do it:

  1. Fill a bowl or basin with room-temperature water
  2. Submerge the kokedama completely for 15 to 20 minutes
  3. Remove and drain well β€” hold it over the sink or take it outside
  4. Return it to its spot only once it stops dripping

How to know when to water:

  • Lift the kokedama. When it feels light, it's time.
  • A well-watered kokedama is noticeably heavier.
  • Frequency varies β€” usually 1 to 2 times a week, more in summer, less in winter.

Never water from above with a watering can β€” the water doesn't reach the roots and can accumulate in the moss.

β˜€οΈ Light β€” find the right spot

Most MORI plants prefer bright indirect light β€” near a window, out of direct sun.

Light type What it means Good for
Bright indirect Near window, no direct sun Pothos, Philodendron, Ficus
Medium indirect Inside a room, away from window Peace Lily, ZZ Plant
Low light Hallway, room with little window Only very tolerant plants

Avoid afternoon direct sun β€” it scorches leaves and dries the moss quickly.

The care card included in your order specifies the ideal light for your specific plant.

🌑️ Temperature & humidity

Kokedamas prefer environments between 16Β°C and 26Β°C.
Avoid draughts, direct radiators, and air conditioning blowing onto the plant.

To increase humidity (especially in winter):

  • Place a tray with pebbles and water beneath the kokedama (without the moss touching the water)
  • Use a nearby humidifier
  • Lightly mist the leaves in the morning (not the moss)

🌿 Fertilising

During spring and summer (growing season), fertilise once a month.

Use a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted in water β€” add it during the soaking.
In autumn and winter, reduce or stop completely.

🐾 Pet safety

Not all plants are safe for cats and dogs.
Check the care card with your kokedama to confirm whether it's pet-friendly.

When in doubt, consult the ASPCA Toxic Plant List or your vet.

πŸ” Troubleshooting

Yellow leaves
Usually: overwatering or lack of light. Check the weight of the kokedama before watering.

Brown leaf tips
Low humidity or chlorinated water. Let water sit for 30 min before soaking, or use filtered water.

Moss drying out and shrinking
The kokedama is very thirsty β€” soak for 30 minutes and monitor over the following days.

Moss looking spongy and dark
Too much water. Let it dry well before the next soak. Ensure good ventilation.

Roots coming out of the moss
Your plant is growing β€” a good sign. When roots are visible and extensive, the kokedama may need refreshing.
